Founding Engineer (AI-Native)

Edinburgh

Hey! We're team Higlo 👋

We're building the AI era's connected device for families. A new way for households to see, talk, and create experiences together across generations.

The physical part of our product, the Hearth, sits above the TV. The Hearth is a powerful device with a pair of 4K wide-angle cameras and a microphone array, that lets families connect naturally together, as groups. You control the Hearth with gestures and voice — lift your hand to wake it, pinch your fingers to enter a shared space with your family. Inside, families talk, play, and build things together using our Shared Imagination Engine, a generative AI system that helps families create experiences rather than consume them.

We're a tiny team that's already built the full stack of this product ourselves — custom hardware, the embedded layer, on-device models, the application, the cloud, and the web apps around it. We're moving fast, and we want the next person in to be excited by that range.

The Role

We're looking for a Founding Engineer (AI-Native) who's a great engineer first, and who treats AI agents as the medium they work in — not as a productivity hack on the side.

We're now an agentic company. Most of our day-to-day building runs through coding agents — Claude Code is our daily driver, and we use Cursor, Codex, MCP, and whatever else is good in the week we're in. We work by talking through a problem, narrowing into a tight spec with the agent, and then building. By the time you read this, the tools will have moved on. By the time you start, they'll have moved on again. We want someone who lives on that edge, not someone catching up to it.

The work splits roughly half-and-half between product features and the infrastructure we build to make agentic development faster and sharper for ourselves. The infrastructure half may shrink over time — for now both are huge.

We want engineers, not developers. The job is picking the right next thing to do, generating creative options, shaping the spec before code, thinking through architecture, failure paths, reviewing what comes back, and building better agent flows so next week is faster than this one.

In this role, you will:

  • Build product features end-to-end, across the Hearth, the cloud, and the web apps

  • Reach into whatever level the problem needs — embedded, on-device models, OS, application, real-time comms, cloud — and feel at home there

  • Touch real, hard domains: custom cameras, vision pipelines, gesture and hand-control, the audio chain, LLM in application, real-time communication, across households

  • Lead the spec, architecture, and review of work done with agents — most of the keystrokes will be theirs, most of the engineering judgement will be yours

  • Design and build the agent flows we work with — the tooling that makes our team faster, sharper, and able to take on bigger problems

  • Stay on the frontier: try the new tool the day it lands, fold it in if it's better, drop the old one without ceremony

This is a broad role. We don't care whether your background is Kotlin, C++, JavaScript, embedded firmware, or something else entirely — we care that you can hold the whole system in your head and pick the right tool for the job.

Your Background Looks Something Like

  • You've shipped real products and have a feel for what "done" actually means in production

  • You're comfortable across multiple layers — embedded, on-device models, OS, application, cloud — even if you wouldn't claim mastery of all of them

  • You've spent meaningful time inside agentic coding tools, and you've felt the difference between using them well and using them badly

  • Genuine excitement (not as a CV signal) for AI, vision, hardware-software co-design, or all of the above

  • Years matter less to us than what you can do walking in the door — but you've got battle scars from shipping in the real world

As a Person, You…

  • Are a great engineer first, with the experience to walk in and have impact

  • Reason about problems first and write (or generate) code second

  • Are AI-native — you don't just use agents, you think in them, build with them, and notice when they're doing something stupid

  • Don't have a favourite layer of the stack — you have favourite problems, and you'll meet them wherever they live

  • Are curious, fast, and allergic to bullshit

  • Love the cutting edge of how software is being built right now, and want to be at the front of it

About the Opportunity

We're three people who've built a full hardware-and-software product ourselves, and we're now at the point where we want a small number of brilliant people to come help us build it out. You'll work directly with the founders, have broad ownership, and have a hand in defining how the company builds — not just what it builds.

We offer competitive salary and meaningful equity, and we work flexibly — a mix of from home and in-person in our office in Edinburgh.

If this speaks to you, whether you tick every box or not, we'd love to hear from you.
